There are a thousand reasons and a thousand pieces
All fragments of me scattered on the floor
Sundered by fears and desires secretly hoarded
A thousand shards glittering dangerously in the dark

No reprieves and no illusions
Just a thousand hungry eyes
Staring through angled reflections
Born of a thousand days denied

Prompt: During the story, a well-established leader steps down. The story must involve a door at the end.

I remember the day the Old Man stepped down. Not many still here do, although the ghosts of memory still haunt these halls, the story becoming legend as it echoed down the years. In this it comes full circle, for it started with vague and impossible rumors.   Read more... )

The Beginning...
Let me tell you a story, ok?
There once was a young man (there's always a young man) who woke up one morning with two words in his head, clear as if someone had just spoken them aloud. Earthquake Weather. He bemusedly wondered where that could have come from. There was nothing unsettling about the morning. No hint of foreboding, no threat of change. So he shrugged it off (as they always do) and went about his day.
